紅樓夢是中國古典小說的巔峰之作。它能夠走向世界，在很大程度上是由於英文翻譯譯本的推廣。由於英語是國際通用語言，因此，一個好的英譯本對於世界學者瞭解紅樓夢十分重要。紅樓夢有兩個最有名的英文全譯本，分別是英國牛津大學教授大衛.霍克斯（David Hawkes）譯本（The Story of the Stone)和中國翻譯家楊憲益和夫人戴乃迭的合譯本(A Dream of Red Mansions)。
作者簡介：
楊憲益（1915年1月10日－2009年11月23日），生於天津，祖籍安徽盱眙(今屬江蘇省淮安市)鮑集鎮梁集村，中國著名翻譯家、外國文學研究專家、詩人。楊憲益曾與夫人戴乃迭合作翻譯全本《紅樓夢》、全本《儒林外史》等多部中國歷史名著，在國外皆獲得好評，產生了廣泛影響。
大衛?霍克思（David Hawkes ），英國漢學家，他的重大成就是英文翻譯一百二十回的《紅樓夢》全譯本，他名之為《石頭記》，這是英語世紀第一個《紅樓夢》全譯本，也是西方漢學史和翻譯界一件大事。霍克思為中國文學走向世界做出了重大貢獻。他也專研楚辭、杜詩等著作。
